Camouflage Paints

Dark Shadows like these are the first things seen by enemy submarines.  Their visibility can be reduced by applying white paint to all areas commonly in shadow. A simplified guide to paint application is given below.

PAINTED ONE COLOR.

This illustration shows the appearance of  dark areas caused by overhanging deck when the entire section is painted one color.  The underside is always in shade.  Some shadow is cast on the bulkhead.

COUNTERSHADED.

This illustration shows the same structure countershaded by the application of white paint in the dark areas.  Undersides of all hanging surfaces should be painted with white.  The white should be brought down from the top of the bulkhead approximately one-third the amount of the overhang.
